Shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a reported blaze in the third floor of a four-story apartment complex in the 1700 block of East West Highway near Rosemary Hills Drive, a spokesperson for the agency said.
A second alarm was called at the Summit Hills apartment in Silver Spring and crews had the bulk of the fire knocked down by 11:45 a.m., though they remained at the scene to continue monitoring the unit.
PIO Pete Piringer said that one person living in the building was evaluated by paramedics, and several families will likely be displaced due to smoke, water, and fire damage.
The fire started in a bedroom on the third story, though the cause remains under investigation.
